You can use the Variable attachment drawing option in ChemDraw as an abbreviated notation for denoting different positional isomers of a compound. The structure will retain its chemical significance.
You can also use variable attachment points in generic structures with alternative groups, also known as R-groups. The parent structure can have a variable attachment point and a list of defined alternative groups.
You can use this R-group structure as a search query containing variable functional groups, instead of having to submit multiple queries on structures sharing a common scaffold.
You can also expand this generic structure in ChemDraw as a quick method for creating all the actual structures it represents.
