  • Some people ask whether ChemBioDraw Ultra supports lipid nomenclature after they learn that ChemBioDraw Ultra also supports proteins and carbohydrates. The answer to that question is, yes, ChemBioDraw Ultra can handle aspects of lipid nomenclature — including fatty acids, phosphoglycerides, triglycerides, and steroids. This article explores lipid nomenclature in ChemBioDraw Ultra’s Struct=Name feature, which is responsible for the both the conversion of chemical names into structures (Name>Struct) and the generation of names for draw structures (Struct>Name).

For the purpose of this article, all lipid class definitions come from the IUPAC Gold Book (IUPAC: Compendium of Chemical Terminology, 2nd ed.; compiled by A. D. McNaught and A. Wilkinson; Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford (1997); online at http://goldbook.iupac.org).

ChemBioDraw’s guiding lipid nomenclature rules can be found in: Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry, 1979 Edition, and A Guide to IUPAC Nomenclature .....
